It's Elementary: Deduction

What makes Sherlock Holmes, Sam Spade, Adrian Monk and Blue of "Blue's Clues" fame such great detectives? They know the key to being a great detective. That is knowing the characteristics of deductive reasoning or thinking like a detective. Grab your magnifying glass, detective shield and deerstalker hat we're on the hunt for detective thinking.

One of the essential questions from the last post was, "What tools do all detectives use?" You might have guesses things like; a magnifying glass, finger print kit, clues, a jacket or a notebook. While all of these are things detective can use, not all detectives use them. Are you a bit puzzled now? Or are you thinking, none of my answers are on the list. Good, now you are thinking and are ready for the list.

  1. Observation
  2. Collect Information
  3. Think or Ponder
  4. Don't Jump to Conclusion
  5. Ah, Ha – Finding the One Right Answer
These tools are also the characteristics of detective thinking. We'll spend the next few post exploring these tools.
